PSA Gem Rates Explained: How to Check Before You Grade
Sending a card to PSA costs money — anywhere from $35 to $605 depending on the card's value. Before you spend that money, you should know your odds of getting a PSA 10. That's where gem rates come in.
What Is a Gem Rate?
A gem rate is the percentage of cards submitted to PSA that receive a PSA 10 “Gem Mint” grade. For example, if 1,000 copies of a card have been submitted and 350 came back as PSA 10, the gem rate is 35%.
This number tells you how likely YOUR card is to grade a 10, assuming it's in similar condition to what others have submitted.
Where to Check Gem Rates
The best free resource is GemRate.com. Search for any card and you'll see the total population (how many have been graded), the number of PSA 10s, and the gem rate percentage.
You can also check PSA's own Population Report directly, though the data is harder to parse.
What's a “Good” Gem Rate?
- 40%+ gem rate — Favorable odds. Most modern chrome cards (Prizm, Select, Optic) fall in this range.
- 25-40% — Decent but risky. Factor in the PSA 9 value as your backup plan.
- Under 25% — High risk. Only grade if the PSA 10 premium is massive (5x+ the raw price).
- Under 10% — Usually not worth grading for profit. The card may have known centering or quality issues.
Which Cards Grade Well?
Generally, modern chrome cards grade better than paper cards:
- Panini Prizm, Select, Optic — typically 30-50% gem rates on base parallels
- Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome — similar range, good quality control
- Donruss base (paper) — lower gem rates (15-25%) due to soft corners and centering
- Downtown inserts — varies widely, check each specific card
How Gem Rates Affect Your Profit
Let's say a card costs $200 raw and is worth $800 as a PSA 10. Sounds like a $600 profit, right? But after grading fees ($35), eBay fees ($109), and shipping ($5), your actual profit is about $451 — IF it grades a 10.
If the gem rate is 40%, you have a 40% chance of that $451 profit and a 60% chance of getting a PSA 9 (which might only sell for $350). Do the expected value math before committing.
